When is a Tooth Extraction Needed?
Tooth extractions may be necessary for a variety of reasons. In many cases, they help prevent further infection caused by severe tooth decay or advanced periodontal (gum) disease that can lead to tooth loosening.
At The Smile Centre, extractions are also commonly performed for impacted teeth — such as wisdom teeth — to prevent issues like infection, pain, or overcrowding.
In some orthodontic cases, a tooth may need to be removed to create space and achieve proper alignment. Additionally, if a patient has suffered dental trauma due to an accident, an extraction may be required to protect the surrounding teeth and maintain overall oral health.
What are the Three Types of Tooth Extraction?
Simple extraction
A simple extraction is performed when the tooth and its roots can be easily removed. At The Smile Centre, the dentist begins by numbing the area with a local anaesthetic to ensure your complete comfort. Using gentle precision and specialized forceps, the affected tooth — including the crown and roots — is carefully removed in one piece. This is one of the most common dental procedures and typically takes less than 10 minutes to complete.
Sectional extraction
This type of extraction is performed when a tooth has multiple or curved roots, making it difficult to remove in one piece. At The Smile Centre, our dentist carefully separates the tooth by sectioning it between the roots using a dental bur. This allows each root to be gently extracted individually, ensuring a safe and precise procedure with minimal discomfort.
Surgical extraction
For more complex cases — such as impacted or deeply fractured teeth — a surgical extraction may be required. During this procedure, our dentist at The Smile Centre carefully lifts the gum to access the underlying bone and may gently trim it to make tooth removal easier. If necessary, the tooth is sectioned so that the roots can be removed separately for a smoother and more precise extraction.
Once the tooth has been removed, the gum is repositioned and secured with stitches. These may dissolve on their own or be removed later during a short, painless follow-up visit. In some cases, the stitches may naturally fall out on their own, which is perfectly normal.

What to Expect During a Tooth Extraction Procedure
At The Smile Centre, our goal is to make sure you feel fully informed, relaxed, and comfortable at every stage of your treatment. Here’s what you can expect during a typical tooth extraction procedure:
- Consultation and Assessment: Your dentist will begin by reviewing your X-rays and examining your mouth to understand your dental condition. This allows us to determine the most suitable extraction method and provide an accurate treatment estimate.
- Discussion of Treatment Plan: We’ll walk you through the entire procedure, explaining each step clearly and addressing any questions or concerns. Our goal is to ensure you feel completely confident and informed before we begin.
- Preparation for the Procedure: Before starting the extraction, we’ll make sure you’re relaxed and the treatment area is fully numbed. Using advanced anaesthetic techniques, we prioritise your comfort and aim to make the process as pain-free as possible.
- Tooth Extraction: During the procedure, the dentist will gently and precisely remove the affected tooth. In most cases, this is a simple process, but if the tooth proves difficult to remove, we may switch to a more advanced technique such as sectional or surgical extraction.
- Adaptable Approach: If complications occur, such as the tooth fracturing, our dentist will smoothly adjust the method to ensure safe and effective removal. Throughout the procedure, we’ll keep you informed and comfortable every step of the way.
- Post-Extraction Care: Once the tooth has been removed, the area will be carefully cleaned and stitched if required. You’ll be asked to bite gently on a piece of gauze to help stop any bleeding. Pain relief prescription and detailed aftercare instructions will also be provided to support smooth healing and recovery.
